With three podiums from three events so far this year, a 40 point lead over the rest of the Pro class and the possibility for him to snatch his first ever Irish Drift Championship title this weekend at his home event, we caught up with now 18 year-old Jack Shanahan ahead of our visit to Kartworld in Watergrasshill.
Take a read of what Jack had to say below.
So Jack, it’s going pretty well so far for you this season. With you sitting on a 40 point championship lead at the moment after just 3 rounds, how are you feeling ahead of round 4 this weekend?
Yeah, having the big gap in the championship has taken a lot of pressure off for next weekend, which means I can push hard and not have to worry too much about it.
Of course it’s a home event for you and last year’s event in Watergrasshill saw you take your second podium in a row in the 2016 season. With 2 already in the bag this season, do you think you can do it again this time around?
Yeah, being a home event makes it fun as most of my friends and people I know from around my area will go and that makes it enjoyable and pushes me on. With 2 wins and a third place, it’s easy to say that this year has already been good to us, but I really do have a good feeling about Watergrasshill this weekend!
As always, we’re going to have a fully stacked Pro driver grid, so it’s going to be a tough weekend for everyone. Who do you think will be your biggest competition?
The grid! No matter who is there it’s going to be tough, but I think that going into this weekend, both Duane and Tomás will be pushing extremely hard and will be as hard to beat as ever.
As well as the IDC 2017 title crown then, the 2017 Drift Super Series will also kick off in Cork on Sunday. What would it mean to you to be the first winner of this brand new series?
With the Drift Super Series starting up and people coming from the UK and even further afield to compete here this weekend, it’s great and it would be awesome for me to be able to prove my worth between both championships back to back and taking the Super Series title home.
With just 2 days to go and time tighter than ever before, we’d like to thank Jack Shanahan for taking the time out to answer these few questions for us ahead of the weekend.
